The premise was inspired by creator Sarah Dunn’s (“Spin City,” “Murphy Brown”) own experiences as a wife and mother, and while Mixon can relate to her character’s feelings of insecurity, she preaches body positivity in her own life.
“I’ve never let the media dictate my identity,” she says.
The Pensacola, Florida, native, 36, plays Katie Otto, whose flawed family moves to the wealthy town of Westport, Connecticut, for the schools, but it turns out they are at odds with the town’s “perfect” mommies and kids. What’s been really cool about playing Katie Otto is that I adore her in the sense of she’s trying to be better. She says it all and does it all and then apologizes, and tomorrow’s a new day. When the series started it looked as if it was going to be about Katie’s weight. I knew going in that, yes, it was about her weight, because she really is bigger than anybody else. I knew stepping into this role, there were so many different places for it to go. I couldn’t be more grateful to do what I love to do.
Dunn is executive producing along with Aaron Kaplan, Rick Wiener, Kenny Schwartz and Fleischer.Katy Mixon spent six seasons as Melissa Mc Carthy’s loveable, dim-witted sister, Victoria, on the CBS sitcom “Mike & Molly.” Just four days after wrapping that series last May, she showed up to work for her first lead role — starring in ABC’s new comedy “American Housewife.” “It was the quickest turnover I’ve ever done in my life,” Mixon, 35, tells The Post. I was so ready.” On “American Housewife” (premiering Tuesday at p.m.), Mixon plays Katie Otto, a married mother of three raising her imperfect family in the wealthy, cookie-cutter town of Westport, Conn. Here, the Stepford Wives-esque moms are constantly remarking over the fuller-figured Katie’s “realness,” so when her neighbor’s decision to move threatens Katie with the self-imposed moniker of “second-fattest housewife in Westport,” it sends her into a tailspin. With the help of her husband Greg (Diedrich Bader), Katie attempts to help their youngest child, the anxious Anna-Kat (Julia Butters), better adapt — while trying to prevent their older kids, Taylor (Meg Donnelly) and Oliver (Daniel Di Maggio), from getting caught up in their new neighborhood’s luxe lifestyle.Mixon grew up far away from Wesport — and Hollywood — in Pensacola, Fla.; when not in character, she speaks in a Southern drawl, often starting her sentences with “Honey.” Now based in LA, she is engaged to former Olympic javelin thrower Breaux Greer.
